Biography

Stephen Hébert was a fighter long before he became a lawyer.  In fact, he competed in amateur boxing, fighting in the lightweight, light-welterweight and welterweight divisions from 1993 through 1999.  Stephen hung up his boxing gloves when he began law school at Loyola University-New Orleans, where he would earn his law degree and be admitted to the Louisiana bar in 2002.
 
Following graduation from law school, Stephen began a distinctive legal career as a law clerk to the Honorable Marc T. Amy at the Louisiana Third Circuit Court of Appeal. Stephen returned to New Orleans to work as an Assistant District Attorney once his tenure with Judge Amy ended.

HébertStephen gained invaluable experience while working in several different divisions within the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office.  He tried a countless number of judge and jury trials.  He managed the docket of several sections of Orleans Parish Criminal District Court as the section senior.  He handled cases in Calcasieu Parish and East Baton Rouge Parish as a special prosecutor.  Stephen additionally helped the Honorable Leon A. Cannizzaro, Jr. reform the policies and procedures for asset and bond forfeiture matters within the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office.


Yet, Stephen’s legal career has not been limited to criminal law. Stephen acquired considerable civil litigation experience while working at King, LeBlanc & Bland, P.L.L.C., where he represented small and large businesses in complex commercial, employment and maritime disputes. Stephen continued to have tremendous success while at King, LeBlanc & Bland, P.L.L.C., trying cases in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, enforcing maritime liens through seizure and judicial sale and recovering Katrina-related business interruption insurance claims.


Since starting his private practice in 2010, Stephen has successfully defended clients in criminal matters across Louisiana.  He has earned numerous accolades and awards for his outstanding work, including:

Aside from his busy practice, Stephen has remained active in teaching and writing articles on a number of topics concerning criminal law and trial practice.  He taught as a guest lecturer in connection with the Tulane University Inter-Disciplinary Experience Seminars program and he has been an adjunct faculty member of the Loyola University-New Orleans School of Law Skills Program since 2011.  Stephen was also a contributing editor to the New Orleans Edition of Attorney at Law Magazine from 2013 through 2014.
 
Stephen is presently admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in Louisiana. While criminal defense comprises most of his practice, Stephen additionally assists plaintiffs with personal injury lawsuits.
 
Despite his busy schedule practicing law and other professional pursuits, Stephen has nonetheless remained active in martial arts and combat sports.  He has sponsored a number of amateur boxing events in the New Orleans area in an effort to give back to the sport of boxing.  While he hung up his boxing gloves a long time ago, Stephen now keeps himself in shape through the practice of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  Stephen has regularly competed in grappling tournaments at the local, national and international level for several years.  On June 1, 2024, he received his black belt from Professor Charles Haymon.
