Orleans Parish - Civil District Court

 

Orleans Parish Civil District Court is a court located in New Orleans, Louisiana, that has jurisdiction over civil cases in Orleans Parish. The court has the authority to hear a wide range of civil cases, including personal injury claims, contract disputes, property disputes, and family law matters.

 

The court is divided into several divisions, including the First City Court, the Second City Court, the Family Court, and the Civil District Court. Each division has its own jurisdiction and specific types of cases that it handles.

 

The judges in Orleans Parish Civil District Court are elected by the citizens of Orleans Parish and serve six-year terms. The court is responsible for ensuring that civil cases are heard and decided fairly and impartially, and that justice is served for all parties involved.

 

In addition to its regular civil caseload, Orleans Parish Civil District Court also has a specialized division, the Mortgage and Conveyance Office, which is responsible for maintaining and recording real estate transactions and property records in Orleans Parish.

 

Orleans Parish Civil District Court has the same civil jurisdiction as the district courts throughout Louisiana, except as otherwise provided by law to other courts (e.g.- Orleans Parish Criminal District Court, Orleans Parish Juvenile Court, etc.).  It is comprised of fourteen elected district judges, Divisions A through N.

 

Orleans Parish Civil District Court also has appellate jurisdiction over all cases tried in the city courts of New Orleans where the amount in dispute, value of the movable property involved, or fund to be distributed does not exceed one hundred dollars, exclusive of interest. These appeals shall be tried de novo by a single judge, and without a jury.

 

Orleans Parish Civil District Court is located at 421 Loyola Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana.  Appeals from Orleans Parish Civil District Court go to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal in New Orleans, Louisiana.
